Better. On Purpose. The Real Reasons I Started Sullivan Solutions
“I’ve heard it more times than I can count: ‘We don’t need marketing.'”
And every time I ask, “Why do you believe that?” — I learn something deeper.
What I’ve come to realize is this:
Small businesses don’t need “more marketing.”
They need better alignment. Clearer strategy. Fewer barriers.
And someone who can translate vision into action.
That’s why I built Sullivan Solutions.
To do better — by design, on purpose, and with grit.
The First Startup I Ever Worked in Was My Own Family’s
I didn’t know what to call it then. But stocking shelves, assisting customers, and watching my parents juggle risk, inventory, and payroll was my earliest education in what it really takes to build a business. It wasn’t a choice; we just did what needed to be done.
What I learned:
- The power of sheer grit to pursue a vision
- The impact of that vision on the people it feeds
- The importance of embedding that vision throughout the business
It stuck with me.
By age 14, I helped to found my next startup. We published a monthly high school newspaper and won national awards for journalism, advertising, and photography.
Through college with co-op jobs and freelancing, through small agencies and corporate roles, through grad school and beyond, as I worked with many other founders— I kept thinking:
“I can do better.”
From Freelancer to Founder: The Business That Works for Other Businesses
Sullivan Solutions LLC began in 1996. At the time, it was me doing design for anyone who needed professional production for their brand. Within a few years, I was leading marketing full-time for a rapidly growing manufacturer and earning more awards for the work we produced.
That’s when I started seeing the problem more clearly:
Most agencies are designed to churn deliverables.
Not solve problems.
Not align a business.
Not lead from the inside.
“We Don’t Need Marketing” — The Myth That Built a Better Business
If you’ve said it, I get it. You’ve got good instincts.
But here’s what I’ve found under that statement:
- Profitability is more complex than ROI
- Vision doesn’t automatically translate to leadership
- Real people make everything harder — and more worth building
And that’s the truth at the heart of Marketing from the C-Suite™ — my framework for working with founder-led businesses to reduce friction, increase clarity, and make decisions that build real value.
I Wanted an Agency. Just Not That Kind.
Yes, my early dream was to build an agency and to “do it better”.
But working with founders and owners who operate their businesses for the long haul taught me that the agency model isn’t “better” for them.
Sullivan Solutions isn’t designed to scale based on how many writers, devs, or designers I can keep billable. It’s built to help small businesses get results with:
- Clear direction
- Operational insight
- Strategic leadership
I built a business that works inside your business — to get the right work done, by the right people, at the right time.
Strategy Is My Superpower. Translation Is My Gift.
Some people are visionaries. Others are executors.
I’ve learned that my zone of genius is translating vision into action.
That’s what makes me a great partner for owner/CEOs. I see the vision behind the to-do list. I ask the hard questions. I help define the roles and the holes. And I never forget that clarity, profitability, and human behavior are all tangled together.
So I developed tools for each phase:
- Jumpstarts — Half-day sessions to generate alignment, action, and accountability
- Intensives — When we need more time and deeper traction
- 90-Day Sprints — Embedded leadership to carry the load, not just give advice
And when you need execution?
We’ve got it — on brand, on target, and without the handholding.
Like Every Owner I Work With, I Struggle with My Own Vision Too
I get it. Your vision is clear in your head but maybe it’s murky in the world.
You’ve tried to communicate it. Tried to delegate it.
But sometimes it takes someone else with their own vision to truly see yours.
That’s what I do for clients.
That’s what I’ve learned to do for myself.
I’m building a solution that’s clear-eyed, strategic, human, and effective.
Not flashy. Not formulaic. Not trend-chasing.
Just focused on building brands that work — inside and out.
